College of Human Medicine Celebrates Stellar Match Day Showing, Returns to In-Person Events Across Community Campuses

Perhaps no other Friday noon hour is as special come every mid-March as that of the Match Day.

Fittingly, the incoming spring means medical school seniors recently learned where they will begin life anew and move onto residency after closing the chapter on medical school. Last Friday's Match Day saw another widely celebrated ceremony for students on their way to a career. That begins with knowing where they'll be spending their first few years of training as official physicians.

This year's Match Day held a record number of MD residency applicants across the nation and College of Human Medicine seniors once again had a terrific showing. Residency matches are made by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), using an algorithm to "match" graduating medical students with available training positions at health systems across the nation. From the NRMP, the 2022 Main Residency Match included 39,205 total positions.

While the percentage of U.S. MD matches ticked up to 92 percent, this year's College of Human Medicine seniors matched at a clip over 97 percent (97.6) among all pathways. The college has consistently had good results above national averages. This has continued through the implementation of our new Shared Discovery Curriculum (SDC). The Class of 2022 is the third graduate class to have gone through the SDC. Seniors matched at 97 percent last year and in 2020, broke the school-record by matching at 99 percent.

The College of Human Medicine returned to in-person events after the pandemic altered last year's Match festivities, forcing many schools to host virtual versions of the tradition. Beyond the Match, this year's graduating class is one to have faced enormous adversity, navigating their final two years of medical school through enormous adversity and disruptions. Yet, the challenges these students faced assuredly prepared them in unique ways for the challenges ahead as modern physicians.

For their accomplishment, these seniors were able to celebrate alongside family and friends as well as colleagues and peers. As a community-based medical school, this meant celebrations far and wide across Michigan, with simultaneous events at each of our community campuses.

After years of hard work, 170 students sought residency with 166 receiving placements confirmed through the NRMP, SOAP/Post Match, and appointments outside of NRMP (Military Match and Advanced/Independent Matches).

The top six specialty placements are as follows:

  • Family Medicine (26 graduates, 15.7%)
  • Emergency Medicine (25 graduates, 15.1%)
  • Internal Medicine (21 graduates, 12.7%)
  • Pediatrics (16 graduates, 9.6%)
  • Psychiatry (11 graduates, 6.6%)
  • Surgery-General (11 graduates, 6.6%)

This year, 43 percent of seniors have placements in a primary care residency (i.e., Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Medicine/Pediatrics, and Pediatrics). This is a slight increase from last year, in which 41 percent of graduates entered primary care.

Over 45 percent (75) of graduates will remain in Michigan for their residency training in 2022. This is also slightly higher than the prior year40 percent in 2021. A good portion will be leaving Michigan and the college will once again be well-represented from coast to coast as Spartan MD's are joining health teams in 27 states and Washington DC. Students will be posted from Maine to California and Florida to Washington.

The success of this, the third graduating class to complete the SDC, further proves that the college's innovative style of medical training prepares graduates to move on to some of the most competitive residency placements across the country.

Since their ninth week in medical school, these students have been forming deep clinical competence throughout all four years of clinical experiences. The curriculum emphasizes portfolios of evidence, as part of the progress suite, instead of just transcripts. These portfolios of artifacts containing essays, videos, reflections, and scholarly products/projects are a useful tool that sets students apart once its time to interview for residency match.

We wish the Class of 2022 the best of luck. We know they'll make the #SpartanMD family proud.
