CHM To Host Virtual Interviews For 2020-21 Cycle: Details and More

This post was updated on Sept. 16, 2020.

As institutions continue to move forward during the pandemic, medical schools are all adapting to departmental and university-wide guidelines, which include social distancing directives and travel restrictions. Admissions offices across the country are having to adjust their admissions processes, which means many medical schools are turning to virtual interviews this year.

The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), in fact, is strongly encouraging medical schools to conduct their applicant interviews in the 2020-21 cycle either by phone or videoconferencing. Beyond limiting contact, virtual interviews warrants less travel, which not only keeps students safe, but also can save applicants upwards of thousands of dollars in flights, lodging, and other transportation costs figured in to visit programs near and far.

Still, virtual interviews also present specific challenges. As the College of Human Medicine Office of Admissions moves forward in the interview season, the aim is always to create a positive, informative virtual interview experience for applicants at every step of the way.

INTERVIEW INVITES

Once we receive an applicant's verified AMCAS application, Secondary application, CASPer Test Score, and MCAT test score, an initial review process will take place to determine whether an invitation to interview will be offered. Applicants invited to interview with the College of Human Medicine will receive the invitation by email. The status in the Applicant Portal will be updated to INVITED TO INTERVIEW

Typically on Interview Day, applicants spend time throughout the day undergoing informational programming and viewing presentations on the college's background, CHM research opportunities, special programs like LMU and LRM, fincancial aid, the Shared Discovery Curriculum, and more. Applicants were also provided with an Interview Day packet of information.

For the 2020-21 cycle, our "interview day" programming will now be broken up into three parts on separate days: the Pre-Interview programming, the formal Interview, and the Post-Interview wrap-up. Once the invite is accepted and the interview date is confirmed, CHM invitees will now receive a virtual interview e-packet of information and subsequent details.

As the interview portion will now consist of a series of events, applicants will begin their interview process with the Pre-Interview Information Session.

PRE-INTERVIEW PRESENTATION

The Pre-Interview Presentation is an online informational that will take place the Thursday leading up to the formal Interview Day, which will be scheduled on one of the weekdays (M-Th) within a following two-week block of interview dates. This allows interviewees the chance to receive important, in-depth information about the college as well as an opportunity to connect with current faculty, staff and students.

Admissions staff will host the presentation from 5-7pm (ET), with a subsequent student panel session from 8-9pm (ET).

Along with learning more about the college's background and offerings, attending the Virtual Pre-Interview Day Presentation will also give applicants an opportunity to test their internet connection and become more familiar with a virtual environment prior to the formal interview.

VIRTUAL INTERVIEW DAY

The formal interview consists of two interviews--one with a current CHM student and the other with CHM faculty. Each interviewee will have their formal interviews on only one day within a two-week block of interviews.

These two traditional interviews will be executed in such a way that will capture important applicant information that would otherwise have been obtained within our MMI. We are confident that this adjustment still provides us with the most accurate information about you, thus giving you the best chance to shine for the Committee on Admissions!

POST-INTERVIEW WRAP-UP (Optional)

Following the two-week block of interviews, the College of Human Medicine is also hosting an optional online wrap-up session to follow up with applicants who may have any lasting questions and/or feedback. Admissions staff will be available to discuss student opportunities in a comfortable, open-floor setting.

VIRTUAL INTERVIEW PREP

The AAMC has created an Applicant Preparation Guide for virtual interviews that shares some helpful tips for applicants as schools shift to virtual interviews. One of the main tips is naturally identifying a suitable environment and technology.

"To complete virtual interviews, you will need the following:

  • A stable internet connection.
  • A computer or tablet with a good webcam and microphone. Although a mobile phone may be used, we recommend using a computer or tablet to improve stability. We also recommend using a device that will not accept phone calls during interviews because a phone call will interfere with your ability to complete your response.
  • A private, quiet, and well-lit space that is free of distractions where you can be alone."

Among other tips are to dress professionally and consider the position of the camera. Though it may seem informal, virtual interviews are official. Also, we all must remember to be patient and understanding this year, as this is new for most. It's certainly going to be an adjustment all around.

Don't hesitate to let us know if you have any further questions or concerns and be sure to follow us for updates. Good luck!
