Class of 2019 Set To Graduate, Join Residency Programs Across US After Strong Spring Match

The College of Human Medicine is geared up to graduate another stellar crop of physicians at this weekend's commencement ceremony. As has been a consistent case in previous years, College of Human Medicine graduates are moving on to strong residency positions across the United States.

The 2019 Main Residency Match was the largest in National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) history, exceeding last year's record total. A new record-high of 38,376 applicants submitted match choices for 35,185 positions, the most ever offered in the Match.

As for #SpartanMD students, 95 percent of the College of Human Medicine seniors seeking a residency position have a confirmed placement. At CHM, 183 seniors had residency placements confirmed through the NRMP, SOAP/Post Match, and Military Match and advanced/independent matches.

While one of the college's primary focus is on enhancing medical care for communities in Michigan, the class of 2019 will embark on journeys to both coasts and almost everywhere in between for further training. Just a tick over 38 percent of graduates will be staying in Michigan for residency, a bit lower than the previous mark of 43 percent for the class of 2018.

New graduates will join health teams in close to 30 states as well as the nation's capital. CHM graduates annually move on to some of the most competitive residency programs in the country.

There was no significant change from the year before, however, when it came to placements in primary care though the percentage did slightly rise. The figures on 2019 seniors show over 44 percent entering primary care fields such as family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics to name a few.

Of the 70 graduates staying in Michigan, just under half will be training in primary care, creating over an 8-point jump from those who matched in Michigan the prior year. Still, specialties outside of primary care like anesthesiology, child neurology, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, pathology, psychiatry, and urology are also among those represented.

The top six specialties placements for the class of 2019 are as follows:
1. Internal Medicine (33 graduates)
2. Family Medicine (26 graduates)
3. Emergency Medicine (21 graduates)
4. Pediatrics (20 graduates)
5. Obstetrics-Gynecology (11 graduates)
6. Radiology Diagnostic (10 graduates)

Yet no matter the specialty, no matter the destination...these new physicians are sure to have a big impact in their communities for years to come. But first, they must share the great experience of graduating medical school. Congrats to the class of 2019! There's always a home for you here at CHM.
