MSU Takes Action Against High Physician Burnout Rate

Image
Burnout among physicians and other clinicians has become an epidemic that requires system-wide changes to address it, according to a new report by the National Academy of Medicine . Long hours, heavy workload, time pressures, technology challenges and dissatisfaction with their work may lead to clinician burnout, said Wanda Lipscomb, the College of Human Medicine ’s associate dean for student affairs, who served on the committee that produced the report, Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout: A Systems Approach to Professional Well-Being . “Burnout is a problem that can be described as emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and a low sense of professional efficacy associated with workplace stress,” Lipscomb said. “A chronic imbalance of high job demands and inadequate job resources can lead to burnout and physician turnover. Eventually that is going to impact patient care.” The report found that one-third to one-half of U.S. clinicians have symptoms of burnout, including emotional e...

Three Takeaways from Historic Mission SMART Pathway with HBCU Xavier University of Louisiana

Image
It's been a big year for expanding pathway opportunities to medical school at the College of Human Medicine . Upon forging additional partnerships throughout the state, the college announced last week an agreement with Xavier University of Louisiana to provide an enhanced opportunity for Xavier premedical students to attend medical school at MSU through our Mission SMART initiative. What is Mission SMART ? The Mission SMART (SpartanMD Acceptance Realization Track) Initiative is an enriched, interest-directed early acceptance program. With this initiative, the College of Human Medicine formally pursues and partners with like-minded undergraduate institutions with whom we share a strong mission-fit, based on graduate experiences and outcomes. To students at those institutions, Mission SMART offers early admission with enriched experiences for undergrads interested in becoming physicians in an underserved region or population. It's a big moment, as the college ...

Recognizing Women In Medicine Is Important Beyond 'Women In Medicine Month'

Image
With September in the rearview mirror, so too is Women in Medicine month. Women in Medicine (WIM) Month "serves to showcase the accomplishments of women physicians as well as to highlight advocacy related to women physicians and health issues impacting women patients," per the American Medical Association , who have even adopted an outline of recommendations for achieving equity. It's with equity in mind that many at the College of Human Medicine believe continuously acknowledging women in the profession is important. Every month. Every year. Today, women make up more than a third of practicing physicians. Large increases in the number of women in medicine have naturally meant more women in med school. As statistics from the American Association of Medical Colleges show, women made up only 9.3% of matriculants in 1966. Fifty years later, women were close to 48% of incoming students. Here at the College of Human Medicine, in fact, five of our last six entering c...

Student Post: What's It Like To Be An M2/MCE?

Image
Question: What’s it Like to be an M2? Two years ago next month, I interviewed to be a part of the College of Human Medicine (CHM) Class of 2022. I was overjoyed to be accepted! I remember vacationing with my family the following summer, during the fleeting weeks of pre-med school life. They asked: What do you do in medical school? I knew my schedule for the upcoming M1/ECE year would involve anatomy lab, pathology lab, clinical simulation lab, small- and large-group learning activities, as well as weekly clinical experiences in an outpatient primary care office. But beyond that, I had no idea what the future would hold. The college's Shared Discovery Curriculum breaks the training down into three main periods: the first year is the Early Clinical Experience (ECE), the second year is the Middle Clinical Experience (MCE), and the third/fourth years are the Late Clinical Experience (LCE). So I wondered: How will things be different as an M2/MCE? In the blink of an eye, ...
