Recognizing Women In Medicine Is Important Beyond 'Women In Medicine Month'

Image
With September in the rearview mirror, so too is Women in Medicine month. Women in Medicine (WIM) Month "serves to showcase the accomplishments of women physicians as well as to highlight advocacy related to women physicians and health issues impacting women patients," per the American Medical Association , who have even adopted an outline of recommendations for achieving equity. It's with equity in mind that many at the College of Human Medicine believe continuously acknowledging women in the profession is important. Every month. Every year. Today, women make up more than a third of practicing physicians. Large increases in the number of women in medicine have naturally meant more women in med school. As statistics from the American Association of Medical Colleges show, women made up only 9.3% of matriculants in 1966. Fifty years later, women were close to 48% of incoming students. Here at the College of Human Medicine, in fact, five of our last six entering c...

Student Post: What's It Like To Be An M2/MCE?

Image
Question: What’s it Like to be an M2? Two years ago next month, I interviewed to be a part of the College of Human Medicine (CHM) Class of 2022. I was overjoyed to be accepted! I remember vacationing with my family the following summer, during the fleeting weeks of pre-med school life. They asked: What do you do in medical school? I knew my schedule for the upcoming M1/ECE year would involve anatomy lab, pathology lab, clinical simulation lab, small- and large-group learning activities, as well as weekly clinical experiences in an outpatient primary care office. But beyond that, I had no idea what the future would hold. The college's Shared Discovery Curriculum breaks the training down into three main periods: the first year is the Early Clinical Experience (ECE), the second year is the Middle Clinical Experience (MCE), and the third/fourth years are the Late Clinical Experience (LCE). So I wondered: How will things be different as an M2/MCE? In the blink of an eye, ...

A big congrats to College of Human Medicine (CHM) student and incredible singer, Enrique Rodriguez-Fhon, on winning the Lansing's Got Talent Competition this last spring!   Having heard about the competition on social media , Enrique first had to get through the preliminary rounds before advancing to the finals. The competition was held over the course of several weeks and featured extremely talented musicians from all ages and backgrounds. Solo acts, duos, and full bands all performed for packed crowds at Reno's North Sports Bar and Grill. In a show of strong support for their classmate, fellow CHM students were among those in the audience. With that in mind, Enrique gave the prelims his best shot with renditions of "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd and "Somebody to Love" by Queen. To his pleasant surprise, Enrique placed first on his night-- those among the top in preliminary rounds were invited to the finals. His invitation to perform for the top spo...
